West Vancouver Freight Access

Franklin Pacific Construction was a key subcontractor to Rotschy Inc for the construction of the structures portion of the West Vancouver Freight Access – Schedule 2 Rail Access project.  This project consists of approximately 1800 lineal feet of shoreline work along the banks of the Columbia River including a 1300 foot long elevated concrete structure founded on driven H-pile and situated directly along the river’s ordinary high water mark.

One of the major challenges of this project was that an in water work period of August 1st to March 3rd was established which in turn compressed about 9 months of work into 7 months.  In order to meet this challenge Franklin Pacific constructed the elevated structure starting at the middle and working towards both ends simultaneously.  Franklin Pacific successfully managed the multiple crews working on different portions of the elevated structure at the same time and we were able to complete all in-water work several weeks early.  Additionally construction activities had to be coordinated with the daily fluctuation of the tidally influenced river so as to minimize the in water work.  Due to the sensitive environmental concerns of working along the Columbia River extreme care had to be taken during all construction activates so as to not contaminate the waters.  Containment systems were implemented during all concrete pours to capture and dispose of all concrete bleed and cure water.  Franklin Pacific completed the project without any violations.

The cost of the trench structure construction was approximately $4 million.
